Copyright renewals for 1955

Copyright renewals made in 1955 are available from this page. Renewals in 1955 are classified by category.

Original copyrights date from 1927 and 1928. 1927 copyrights could also be renewed in 1954, and 1928 copyrights could also be renewed in 1956.

The following types of renewal records are available here:

To see if a book can go online, you may have to check not only the "Books" category, but also the "periodicals" category, if parts of the book first appeared in a periodical, and the "artwork" category if you want to scan any of the illustrations. If the book is a play, or a set of lectures or addresses, check the "Drama and Works Prepared for Oral Delivery" category too.

Copyright renewals also exist for music, film, commercial prints, and certain other categories. We have no immediate plans to digitize these, since we're mainly interested in book renewals at this point. If you want to digitize these, though, contact onlinebooks@pobox.upenn.edu.

A guide to abbreviations used in the records is now available. Other introductory information may be available soon.

Renewals for Artwork

The following page images are available (as PDFs): The images above were scanned from simple photocopies of bound volumes, and from microfilm, by the Universal Library Project, Greg Weeks, and the Penn Libraries (with a volume loaned from Stanford, and microfilm loaned from the Free Library of Philadelphia). More images, and text or HTML transcriptions, gladly accepted. Images should be in GIF, JPEG, PDF, PNG, or TIFF form, and not much bigger than 500K per page. Mail to onlinebooks@pobox.upenn.edu for more details about how to get them to me (please don't send any images by email unless I ask for them!)
