I believe that the books between 1976 and 1989 without a copyright notice
had a chance of being cured for five years (from 1989 to 1994). See
Section 405 at <http://lcweb.loc.gov/copyright/title17/4-405.html>.

So, it is always advisable to check the registration at the Copyright
Office for books (or any copyrightable work) from 1976 and on.
