Book People Archive

DjVu for scanned books, again.

I noticed in the archive that there have been a few mentions of DjVu
Libre (http://djvu.sourceforge.net) in the past, but nothing for a
while. Is it that it was tried and found wanting, or are people using it
without fanfare?

I was pleasantly surprised to find that:

1) it squished a scanned book held in a hard-to-browse compressed tar
archive of pbm files totalled 38MB down to 6.4MB -- and can now be
browsed/printed easily.

2) the [free] Any2DjVu server at http://djvuzone.org/ does OCR, and
embeds the text within the djvu file it returns. The OCR seems accurate
(English only, alas), and the text can be extracted and edited.

The technology is patented, alas, but is free "for open source usage"
(?) and the package does include a djvu to PNM filter so at least you
can get your files back.

Does anyone here use it, at all?
